UPDATE: This package is no longer available. Individual tickets for each show can still be purchased where available.
As the most frequently appearing musician on our stages across our 20-year history, CPA has invited Johnny Gandelsman to serve as our first-ever Curator-in-Residence and cultivate a special series with a selection of This Is America composers and collaborators. The series has four remaining performances this year (March 3, March 4, April 23, and April 24) and will take place in the Current ArtSpace + Studio. Read on about this special series at CPA.

This is America Comes to Chapel Hill

Amid the vulnerability and isolation of the pandemic, producer, violinist, and Brooklyn Rider founding member Johnny Gandelsman embarked on a profound creative journey. He invited composers to craft new music reflecting their experiences during that tumultuous time, resulting in This is America, an extraordinary anthology of 22 commissioned works.

Since then, Gandelsman’s career has reached remarkable new heights. A 2024 recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant, he is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Brooklyn Rider, currently working as CPA’s first-ever curator-in-residence, and in November 2024, achieved a major milestone by performing the entire This is America anthology at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art—an ambitious feat accomplished over just two days.

Speaking with The New York Times ahead of his Met performance, Gandelsman, when asked about what he’s learned from This is America, said:

“I’m now able to be more thoughtful and temper my feelings of fear or discomfort with curiosity and discovery. Fear and curiosity are not that far from each other; it’s just a shift of focus or perspective. Being part of the new music community is something that I expect to be doing for the rest of my time as a musician. So that is a good skill to have.”

Now, Gandelsman will bring a curated selection of songs from the album Pitchfork magazine called “ambitious” and “crystallizing a new vision for American classical music” to CPA. As a special bonus, Gandelsman curated a playlist specifically for CPA, available exclusively on Apple Music:
