Permanent Staff Positions
Director of Production
The Director of Production, who reports to the Director of Programming, is the senior leader of Carolina Performing Arts’ technical and production team. They are responsible for the planning and successful execution of technical operations and event production for all programs, presentations, co-productions, workshops and other events taking place in CPA-managed venues, including Memorial Hall, Gerrard Hall, and CURRENT ArtSpace + Studio, as well as for CPA events in alternate locations. The Director of Production collaborates with other senior leadership to serve as a key contributor to CPA’s performance season programming and planning process and long-term organizational planning.
The position is responsible for development and overall management of the organization’s production budget of approximately $700,000 annually, and monitoring expenses including short and long-term purchases, upgrades, maintenance and other special equipment. They collaborate with CPA operations staff on the management of the facility operations budget and maintenance, which includes over $1 million of specialized technical and production equipment in Memorial Hall alone, as well as specialized equipment and technical systems in other venues managed or used by Carolina Performing Arts.
This position supervises at minimum two full-time permanent Production Managers and assists in training and supervising at least two full-time permanent Assistant Production Managers, one full-time permanent Lighting Lead, one full-time permanent Audio Lead, and approximately forty part-time student employee technicians and approximately twenty-five contracted technical staff. Technical and event support delivered by this team includes live multi-channel audio mixing and recording, designing and operating lighting utilizing computerized light control and dimming systems, rigging, smart classroom technology, multimedia laptop support, wireless internet configuration, PowerPoint and other presentation software, data and video projectors, video conference codecs, and live web streaming.
Specific job duties must be fulfilled independently with minimal direct oversight/supervision. The Director of Production has direct responsibility for the overall quality of the performers’ and audience’s experience, and for maintaining positive University and community relations. The successful accomplishment of these responsibilities directly contributes to the image and reputation of CPAand the University for thousands of patrons and countless UNC students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Digital Media Design Specialist
As a member of the Marketing and Communications team, the Digital Media Design Specialist must be a compelling visual storyteller and a highly flexible and engaged designer across mediums, with an ability to adapt visual content for different audiences. They will implement Carolina Performing Arts (CPA) marketing and communications strategy by researching, creating, and executing digital media assets that ensure CPA’s story, message, and calls to action are supported with dynamic visuals and branding. Their efforts will directly impact the activation and efficacy of CPA’s channels to increase brand awareness, drive engagement, and generate revenue.
The Digital Media Design Specialist reports to the Associate Director of Marketing and Communications. They work in close collaboration with the Digital Communications Specialist to create, repurpose, maintain, and optimize visual content targeted to audiences, partners, and stakeholders. The Digital Media Design Specialist is responsible for the creation and management of a variety of graphic design, photography, audio, video, and layout work, as well as website edits and improvements. They also develop additional brand collateral, including print ads, promotional items (swag), and event signage. Routine deliverables include digital media for ad campaigns, newsletters, blogs, social media, websites, and proposals.
This position will manage projects from start to finish, working both collaboratively and independently with teammates across CPA and the UNC campus. The Digital Media Design Specialist serves as a key resource and subject matter expert for their colleagues regarding both digital and non-digital design. They work collaboratively to ensure that CPA brand collateral is professional, compelling, accurate, audience appropriate, and conforms to best practices of digital media and design, as well as to University and CPA style, standards, and policies.
