What Belongs to Me?

The Crossing
November 15, 2024
8 PM

Donald Nally, conductor

Experience What Belongs to Me?, a kaleidoscope of styles and ideas. Movements of David Lang’s poor hymnal bookend a program that features music written for the choir by former Carolina Performing Arts resident artist Shara Nova. The music reflects her focus on making the world a better place through our actions and art. Ayanna WoodsInfinite Body begins with a consideration of capitalism’s effects on our bodies and develops into a glaring affirmation of love:

My love, our time

on earth is made

of sunlight—and you,

beaming at me

golden.

And, Gabriela Ortiz’s raucous, exhilarating Tierra Parte 1, questions, with hope, the Earth’s ability to forgive us.

The thread is Nova’s music. Movements from her magnum opus Titration explore our trauma, grief, and the role of our vagal nerve in moving from anger, through imagination, to calmness. Nova’s final work, Resolve, is an unfettered riff on what’s possible, urging in profoundly rich, driving music: “Be not discouraged, do not fall into numbness. Resolve to increase your discomfort, and thus attain a calm body. Be curious of one another. Reap the reward, truth.”
