High-octane and daring … this limit-pushing display of human action.” – Arts Meme

What can the human body do? Or maybe, what can it not do?

In DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME, STREB performers—called “Action Heroes”—dive, fling, flip, and fall off of massive moving structures with split-second timing and fearless precision. Audiences gasp, laugh, tense up, and wonder how what they’re seeing is even possible.

Founder Elizabeth Streb has been called the Evel Knievel of dance, a thrill-seeker, and a Superwoman. She is the founder of SLAM—the STREB Lab for Action Mechanics—in Brooklyn, where her company has spent decades developing a movement practice called PopAction: a fusion acrobatics, rodeo, dance and athletics, rooted in a lifelong obsession with what happens to the human body when it is fully, fearlessly committed to motion. Her philosophy: “Anything too safe is not action.”

The company transforms physical risk into spectacles of wonder, exploring the outer extremes of human movement, asking what becomes possible when courage, creativity, athleticism, and engineering collide.

Why We’re Presenting This

At a research university, we are interested in cross-disciplinary exploration. Streb came to dance through a study of mathematics, physics, and philosophy. Her work is as much research as performance, an ongoing investigation into body mechanics, physical engineering, what movement means, what an audience experiences when they witness a human being do something that seems genuinely impossible.

The experience is immediate and visceral: audiences will encounter something that their bodies understand before their minds do. It reminds us that some of the simplest live experiences—just the human body and gravity—are also the most powerful, leaving us asking the same question: How did they do that?
