Voice of Nature: the Anthropocene

Please note: Due to weather uncertainties across the Eastern United States, this event has been canceled. Affected patrons will be contacted by email regarding their ticket options. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we make our best efforts to reschedule.

Renée Fleming makes her debut performance at Carolina Performing Arts with Voice of Nature: the Anthropocene, a concert that explores nature’s beauty and fragility. Inspired by Fleming’s GRAMMY ® Award-winning album, this recital blends music and film, and spans centuries of music—from Handel to Björk.

“I thought of the great legacy of song literature that I love, when Romantic-era poets and composers reveled in imagery of nature, finding reflections of human experience in the environment… the result, in collaboration with my friend Yannick Nézet-Séguin, was the album Voice of Nature: the Anthropocene.”
– Renée Fleming

On January 23, Fleming will be joined by UNC neuroscientists and members of the medical community for a dynamic discussion bridging artistic insight with cutting-edge research. Learn more about the conversation Music and Mind here

Together, these two separately-ticketed events offer a singular artistic experience—intellectually rich, emotionally expansive, and deeply aligned with CPA’s belief that the arts are essential to well-being.

About Myra Huang

Huang has become one of the most sought-after collaborative pianists and opera educators of her time. She is known for an artistry that places listening, color, and collaboration at its center. Acclaimed by Opera News as “one of the top accompanists of her generation” and described by The New York Times as “a coloristic tour de force.”

Her career unfolds at the intersection of recital, opera, and mentorship. As a recitalist, Huang appears regularly on the world’s leading stages, including Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and the 92nd Street Y. She is a trusted partner to many of today’s most distinguished singers, bringing a rare combination of stylistic acuity, technical mastery, and dramatic intuition to every collaboration. Her artistic partnerships span generations and genres, united by a shared commitment to storytelling through music.

Huang’s work has also been shaped by the operatic stage. For fifteen years, she served as pianist for the Operalia International Competition under the direction of Plácido Domingo, performing in major opera houses across Europe and beyond. She was the recipient of the 2019 Samuel Sanders Collaborative Artist Award, honoring her profound impact on the art of collaboration, and she was frequently invited by the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to perform in recital for the United States Supreme Court. She was on the music staff of Houston Grand Opera, New York City Opera, Washington National Opera, and the Palau De Les Arts in Valencia, Spain.

Equally devoted to education, Huang is Head of Music for the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at The Metropolitan Opera, Head of Music of Aspen Opera Theater Vocal Arts at the Aspen Music Festival, and a faculty member at the Manhattan School of Music. She is an active presence on the international stage as an adjudicator—serving on juries including the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition and the Seoul International Music Competition—and as a master teacher, giving masterclasses around the world. In these roles, she mentors young singers and pianists, shaping not only their musicianship but their artistic values. Her Grammy®-nominated recordings Gods and Monsters and Clairières with tenor Nicholas Phan mark her as one of the preeminent artists of her generation.

Myra Huang is a Steinway Artist.
