What do you get when you blend Appalachian bluegrass and old-time music with Latin American folk traditions including flamenco, murga, and candombe? You get Che Apalache’s acclaimed Latingrass!
Founder Joe Troop grew up in North Carolina and taught music in Buenos Aires after graduating from UNC. His students became his bandmates: Pau Barjau on banjo, Franco Martino on guitar, and Omar Ruiz-Lopez on mandolin.
Rooted in traditions that span continents, the band grew out of a willingness to follow interests across languages, cultures, and traditions. What emerged is a sound shaped by relationships, shared experiences, and a genuine openness to learning from one another.
Why We’re Presenting This
Che Apalache carries a special connection to Carolina through co-founder Joe Troop, who grew up in Winston-Salem, fell in love with bluegrass as a teenager after hearing Doc Watson, and came to UNC-Chapel Hill to study Spanish and explore Latin American music. The band’s music reminds us that curiosity can be a powerful force for connection. Sometimes the most unexpected combinations create something entirely new and sometimes they simply help us recognize how much we already share.
