Ballet BC transforms a theater full of strangers into a single, collective audience response—a gasp, a silence, a moment of awe.
This triple bill explores what it means to be human in relationship to one another, moving from the vulnerable to the virtuosic, exploring deeply personal stories and moments of quiet intimacy to the exhilaration of masses of bodies moving together as one.
The evening opens with Obsidian by choreographic collaborators Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, whose work has been described as “wild and rebellious.” Artistic Director Medhi Walerski’s SWAY follows, inspired by Emily Dickinson’s poem “Hope is the thing with feathers” and set to an original score by Adrien Cronet, creating moments as fleeting and precarious as the hope described in the poem. The evening concludes with Shahar Binyamini’s BOLERO X, set to Ravel’s Boléro, that builds with pulsating drive and excitement as the ranks of Ballet BC dancers multiply their forces, turning the stage into a sweeping, euphoric, collective—and culminating in a finale so extraordinary that a room full of strangers can’t help but respond together.
Why We’re Presenting This
Ballet BC reminds us that the human body can be a source of wonder, capable of expressing ideas, emotions, and connections that words alone cannot fully capture, giving physical form to experiences like grief, hope and joy.
Across three distinct works, Ballet BC combines extraordinary physical precision with emotional depth, delivering a collective catharsis we all need right now.
The program also carries a meaningful North Carolina connection through choreographer Bobbi Jene Smith, whose artistic journey began at the North Carolina School of the Arts before leading her to stages and companies around the world.
