Onstage is a two-story house. From one angle, it’s mucked out after a flood. From another, it’s a new development wrapped in Tyvek. And from another, it’s “Tara” from Gone with the Wind being transformed into an Airbnb. The piano can’t be tuned. Someone is quilting in the corner. Come in.
Co-written by 21 Black-, POC-, and white-identifying artists ranging in age from 29 to 99, Reconstructing is a new work from internationally renowned theater collective the TEAM that asks how, in the aftermath of slavery, we might move through history together. A “complex and combustible project” (Sarah Holdren, Vulture), Reconstructing slips between fact and fiction and performance and ritual to tell a story of historical figures, fictional characters, and the show’s artists as they all seek and flee intimacy.

Why We’re Presenting This
Carolina Performing Arts continues to advance Southern Futures—our initiative that invites and supports artists in exploring the South’s past, present, and future through bold, research-based, interdisciplinary performances. Since 2023, the TEAM has been a resident artist with us, deeply engaged in research and discovery. Now, their journey culminates in a powerful new work co-commissioned by CPA for Southern Futures—marking their debut performance in Chapel Hill.
About The TEAM

Founded in 2004, the TEAM is a Brooklyn-based experimental theatre collective, spirited by some of the wildest and deepest artists working today. Once described by The Guardian as “theatrical excavators of American culture, American dreams, and the American psyche,” the TEAM collaboratively creates new works about the experience of living in the United States today to generate dialogue about our nation’s past, present, and future through production and touring.
To date, The TEAM has created and toured 12 works, including Mission Drift and RoosevElvis, and their work has been seen at venues such as National Theatre of London, The Public, PS122, The Bushwick Starr, ArtsEmerson, A.R.T., Walker Art Center, Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre, Almeida Theatre, the Salzburg Festival, Perth International Arts Festival, Hong Kong Arts Festival, and more.
Rachel Chavkin is a Tony Award–winning director and the founding artistic director of the experimental theater collective the TEAM. Known for her visionary, ensemble-driven work, she has directed acclaimed productions including Hadestown, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, and The Royale. Her work has been seen across Broadway, major regional theaters, and international festivals, and she was honored with the 2017 Smithsonian Award for Ingenuity.
Zhailon Levingston is a Louisiana-raised storyteller, and director. He is a board member for the Broadway Advocacy Coalition, which received an honorary Tony award in 2021. Levingston is also the Artistic Director for the Inheritance Theatre Project. Selected credits include: Tina (Resident Director) Hadestown (Korea) The Wiz (Cincinnati Children’s Theatre) Chicken and Biscuits (Broadway) Patience (Second Stage). Little Miss Perfect (Goodspeed) CATS (Perelman Performing Arts Center).
Emma Orme is a Brooklyn-based performer and producer with a passion for developing bold new theatrical work. She is the Producing Director of the TEAM and was a 2022–24 Fellow of WP Theater’s prestigious Lab. Her producing and performance credits span Off-Broadway, national festivals, and digital platforms, including the Obie award-winning CIRCLE JERK, 1-800-3592-113592 (Best Theater of 2024, New Yorker), and more.
“We believe how we make is as important as what we make, and our producing practices strive to embody our values of collective liberation.”
