Mahler Chamber Orchestra
“I firmly believe every program should have its own life and be a representation of how I feel at the moment.”
—Yuja Wang for The New York Times
Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO) returns to Memorial Hall for an evening of the music of Prokofiev and Hindemith, and their fourth performance on the Carolina Performing Arts series. This time, the orchestra is led by singular GRAMMY® Award-winning pianist Yuja Wang, who directs from her instrument. Wang is not only one of the world’s leading virtuosos, but also an artist with a true gift for “drawing you into the world of each composer” (Financial Times).

Why We’re Presenting This
Mahler Chamber Orchestra has performed on our stage numerous times since 2019, and we remain inspired and compelled by their distinct sound and uniquely democratic structure. Wang has performed alongside many of the world’s most revered conductors, musicians, and ensembles. Celebrated for her breathtaking virtuosity, she is equally known for the spontaneity and vitality she brings to every performance. We look forward to experiencing her collaboration with our friends in the Mahler Chamber Orchestra as they return to Chapel Hill with this new artistic partner.

About Mahler Chamber Orchestra
Since its foundation in 1997, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO) has established itself as one of the world’s leading chamber orchestras. Working as a “global collective,” the MCO is led by its members in collaboration with its Berlin-based management office. The musicians, who come from around 25 different countries, unite for each tour or project. The chamber music dialogue and unanimous act of listening shape the Orchestra’s sound; it’s a philosophy inspired by the Orchestra’s founding mentor Claudio Abbado that the MCO calls The Sound of Listening.
